Bump and Grind Friday

Posted on February 3, 2006

Okay, so no real bumping and/or grinding. I can barely walk and not look like a fucking spastic.

Had one of the last few STAPLE! organizational meetings last night. This year is going to be incredible. With double the guests, double the space (both of those are probably more than double, now that I think about it), and such activities as the Mahfood and Crosland live art show on Saturday night, STAPLE! is rapidly becoming an indie comics show to be reckoned with. Oliveri, I expect you to be there next year. You too, Keene.

So, yeah. The meeting went well, even though it descended into hilarity near the end. I can’t even remember most of what I said, only Robin pointing at me and saying “You haven’t even had any beer!” and Chris telling her “Nate’s always like this.”

In closing, I saw a headline on CNN this morning: New Machine Gun Fires 50 Rounds a Second. Thank the good lord for this, because it usually takes me about 49 rounds to get warmed up.

Brian Keene’s FEAR Progress

The scripts are done, the artists are selected. Contracts should go out tomorrow, and with any luck we’ll be firing on all cylinders by Monday.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Gods and Monsters

Gods and Monsters marks my first anthology appearance. This is the one that will contain “Rain Against My Window.” Look for it on March 30th from Simian Publishing.

A word from the publisher…

Caught up in the bright lights of the modern world, it is easy to pretend that the old myths and legends have lost their hold over our hearts and imaginations. Sometimes, when we least expect it, the old archetypes return in terrifying new forms.

The Checklist

Posted on February 1, 2006

I cribbed this from Brian Keene’s essay How I Make a Living Writing Full Time. Just using it as a personal reminder to myself and anybody who thinks I’m joking with my constant “I need to write more” rhetoric.

To write full-time like me, you will need the following things:

1. A spouse or partner who is willing to continue working (if you do not have this, substitute a trust fund, wealthy benefactor, or windfall at Vegas).
2. Reliable health insurance.
3. The ability to work a minimum of five days a week, eight hours a day. (More will be helpful).
4. The clarity to separate art from profession and business from pleasure, because we are not having fun with a hobby—we are paying the fucking bills on time.
5. The ability to take honest criticism, because when you’re writing four books a year, not all of them are going to be your best work.

Now, please continue your Wednesday.

A Question for the Day

Posted on February 1, 2006

Right now, I’m listening to some Beatles song. It’s that “word” one. Y’know… “Say the word, and you’ll agree. Say the word, and be like me.” Every now and then, I hear a song like that from The Beatles and wonder…

Why the fuck were The Beatles such a big deal?
